absences add off

There are many reasons kids miss school.  Illness, anxiety, and transportation issues can all play a role. As partners in education, we want to help.

• Set up a conference with your child's teacher.  The teacher may have insight into struggles that may cause a child to feel unwell and unmotivated to attend.

• Contact your school counselor.  Anxiety, worry about friendships, bullying, or school safety are sometimes a factor.  Counselors are a resource to develop strategies for success.

• Talk to your child's primary health care provider.  Discuss the differences between illnesses that require you to stay home and which do not.  Allergies, headaches, and other issues are unpleasant distractions.  Find ways to get relief and allow your child to be at school.

• Partner with your truancy officer.  Their job is to establish strategies to help students arrive at school prepared, on time, every day.  Call 325-574-8800.

• Catch the bus. We give free rides. Call the transportation office to find out about available bus routes at 325-574-8950.

• Have a positive attitude about school. You set the tone. Attending school not only helps your child become successful academically, but instills a strong work ethic and friendships.

Understandably, we have had a lot of kids absent this year due to COVID illness and quarantine. Both students and teachers are working hard to make up for lost time.  Did you know that missing just 2 days a month means a child misses 10% of the school year?  On some SISD campuses, 14% of kids have already missed at least 20 days,  of school.  Although attendance is improving, we can do better.  Let’s partner together to make the most of what we have left this semester.  Our teachers are eager to have students back in the classroom.
