Ms. Wells’ 7th & 8th Grade STEM classes at Snyder Junior High School are currently learning about biomimicry. Biomimicry is the design of materials, structures, or systems modeled after nature and natural adaptations in different habitats and environments. The students were challenged to create a 3D working model of a biomimetic product.
The top model was the group of Anthony Vasquez, Jayden Sandoval, and Jared Hernandez, who created and completed their windmill, which used biomimicry by relating to the fins of whales. The whale’s flippers give it a hydrodynamic advantage, and the students' research showed that similar shapes make the wind turbine more efficient.
